CAMILLE FOURNET
ORLAN, always written in capital letters, is one of the greatest internationally recognized French artists. A pioneer of the feminist movement in the 1970s, ORLAN is not bound to any particular material, technology, or artistic practice. She works with sculpture, photography, performance, video, 3D, video games, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and robotics (she even created a robot in her own image that speaks with her voice), as well as scientific and medical techniques such as surgery and biotechnologies… all to critically examine the societal phenomena of our time.
ÉQUINOXES
« My work questions the disappearance of certain animals and birds. I present these animals that I hybridize with other animals in their natural environment surrounded by robots. »

When we designate handbags and backpacks we refer to the body. The bag is carried by the hand but its name could make us believe that it contains hands, hence my idea of inscribing on the bags, whether they are handbags, backpacks or others, parts of my body (the impressions of face, eye, earring, ear, hand...). The bag is like a prosthesis that allows us to carry the items we need. It is the development, the continuation of our pockets.
Please describe your creative process.
I am an artist who is not subject to an artistic practice, a material or a technology whether old or new. I use sculpture, photography, performance, video, 3D, video games, augmented reality, artificial intelligence and robotics (I created a robot in my image, which speaks with my voice) as well as scientific and medical techniques such as surgery and biotechnologies... What I like is to say important things for my time, to question social phenomena always with a critical distance.
Leather goods bring us know-how to what we call “the beautiful hand” but also to bags made of leather or animal skin (lizard, crocodile, etc.). Currently, we are questioning all the materials we use, whether natural or artificial, and their carbon footprint. My work questions the disappearance of certain animals and birds. I introduce these animals as the hybrid to other animals in their natural environment surrounded by robots. The robots are made of recycled objects. They are there to question new technologies that can either destroy or build a more equitable world.
